Rumors often damage the community and individuals. People can be susceptible to rumors for a variety of reasons - either they be pathos, ethos, or logos based. It's important that we as individuals realize that rumors can be wielded as weapons against others. So, what can you do if you hear a rumor?
If you hear a rumor, investigate to the extent you can and consider the source - and if it's not information that you can validate, don't continue to spread those rumors.
Some questions you can ask: Does the source have firsthand, secondhand, or third hand knowledge? Why are they providing this information? Is there an agenda attached? If they were not direct witnesses or participants - who/what was their source? Is there any way to verify said rumors? Did you talk to the people involved before talking with others? Did you get a single point of view or multiple? Are people playing the telephone game with these rumors? Spreading rumors without doing any due diligence causes additional harm to the community.
I have heard so many rumors about people I know and myself that are demonstrably false and shows that rumor spreaders have no idea what or who they are talking about. These unverified rumors damage the individuals involved, relationships among others, and the community. Rumors deserve to be challenged. Frequently, the person who is the target of said rumors has zero recompense and cannot combat salacious and unfounded rumors.
For example: there are several rumors about how many sexual partners I have. However, in the last 5 years, less than 10 people have seen my cock…and less than that have had my cock go into an orifice of theirs. If you listen to some of the rumors, I have a harem of some sort. There are times that I wish I was slutty as those rumors purport me to be.
So, if you want some clarity about a rumor about me, DM me and I’ll see what I can do to respond, I might even be able to provide text messages that would cause some of the narratives to be questioned…Otherwise, fuck off.
